What's the origin of "Zhou Zu Ling" National Forest Park?

"Marquis of Qin Buried Dog instead of burying Human Beings" is an odd ancient legend, and "Zhou Zu Ling" is its follow-up.

The name "Zhou Zu Ling" represents the original belief of Qin people--"rebirth after death". They believed that people would go to hell after death and only soul would return to the world. So when their ancestors died, they would bury a dog in the tomb to accompany the deceased on their journey to hell. Whenever there was any problem with the family, they would kill a dog, which they called "asking for soul from Mount Dog", to seek help from their ancestors.

Qin people thought that the highest mountain is most likely connected with the heaven. They believed that the grave of their ancestors or previous chiefs should be placed on the top of mountains. The emperor of Qin and subsequent states also followed this tradition.

In order to worship their ancestors, Emperor Qin initiated a ceremony called "grand worship of ancestors' graves". On March 3rd every year, he would pay a visit to Zongling Tomb and sacrifice a dog to his ancestors to commemorate their greatness.

Beijing Roast Duck is the most famous Peking cuisine. As a must-order Peking cuisine when people travel to Beijing, how do you think it came into being?

Legend has it that Zhu Yuanzhang, the founding emperor of Ming Dynasty, was once a beggar. Once when he was begging along the downtown area, he came to a street of restaurants and smelled a strong fragrance. He saw that there was a golden duck hanging in the window of a restaurant, and his saliva began to flow out.

However, Zhu Yuanzhang had no money and could only stare at the duck. The innkeeper saw Zhu Yuanzhang's appearance and assumed that he was starving. He gave Zhu a roast duck, and Zhu Yuanzhang ate it all.

After Emperor Zhu ascended to the throne, he wanted to eat that kind of roast duck again. However, the palace kitchen master couldn't make the same taste no matter how hard he tried. Zhu Yuanzhang was so angry that he decided to send the royal chef to the streets to study.

The imperial chef saw the stove of the innkeeper at the beginning, and pretended to invite the innkeeper to the palace to cook. When the innkeeper came to the palace, the imperial chef threatened him to hand over the secret recipe. The innkeeper refused, so the imperial chef put him in the prison.

Later, Zhu Yuanzhang wanted to taste the roast duck, so the imperial chef had to find a way. In the dungeon, the chef was threatened and tempted, but the innkeeper didn't leak the secret of Peking roast duck.

So the chef, in order to protect his life, had to tell a lie and said that Beijing roast duck was from hanging the duck in front of the fire. The chef made a roast duck as usual, but it didn't taste as delicious as before.

Zhu Yuanzhang saw that the chef couldn't make the same taste as before, and asked him the reason. The chef told the emperor that without sauce and dipping sauce, the roast duck had no taste. Therefore, a sauce and a dipping sauce were added, and finally the roast duck came into being.

Of course, this is just a legend. Regarding the origin of Peking roast duck, the most reliable record should be Yang Zhihua’s "Comoedia Cheng and Zhao" in Yuan Dynasty: “Zhao (referring to soft) is the golden roast duck from Daxing (A district near Beijing)". This record confirmed that roast duck is widely available in Beijing area.

Roast duck has become a well-known famous dish, not only in Beijing, but even in the whole country. It is very popular both at home and abroad. One of the famous dishes that Chinese people must order when they go abroad.

In folklore, there are a lot of ghosts and spirits in the cave. As a result, no local guild members interested in investigating its this legend up close.

We followed the path into the cave. It was cool and humid inside, which was full of mystery. After visiting Goose Pool Cave, we returned to the main road and continued to visit other attractions in Kangyou Gorge.

The path of Kangyou Gorge is lined with pavilions and towers. The scenery along the way is beautiful. There are many caves in the gorge, which constitute one of the highlights of the gorge.

Legend has it that there are 12 holes in the gorge, large and small. They say that one of the holes can reach Dongzhu Mountain. One day, a Taoist from Dongzhu Mountain walked into the hole and accidentally walked to the gorge. When he exited the hole, he was shocked by the magnificent scene in front of him, so he stayed in the gorge to preach Taoism.
